The USA mens basketball team made news by beating Australia, 98-88, on Wednesday. The ten-point victory, considered very narrow in light of the Team USA’s depth, put the world on notice that it just might be possible to best some of the NBA’s top talent in international competition. Thankfully, Carmelo Anthony kept the sky from falling and the speculators from speculating too much with a clutch 31-point performance. In the process, Melo became Team USA’s all-time leading scorer at 276 points, and currently sits with 293. For reference, Michael Jordan racked up 256 points during his stints at the games in 1984 and 1992. All that’s left for Melo is to nab his third Olympic gold. Then, of course, get the New York Knicks their first ring since 1973.
