Air Jordan 15 has been maligned since it debuted in late 1999. Tinker Hatfield was inspired by the rocket-powered X-15 experimental aircraft, but somehow the protruding tongue, shield-like woven upper and blocky sole on the final product just didn’t connect with fans as Jordans past had. According to Complex, that’s a huge reason why Hatfield welcomed the chance to recast AJ15 for a new collaboration with LAIKA Studios and the upcoming film Kubo and the Two Strings. The tongue is gone, à la AJ15 SE. A zip-up enclosure now flows with the 15’s narrow lines, and a cross-hatched leather swatch has replaced the lined Pebax cup at each heel. The blue and red highlighted colorways represent the good/evil dynamic of Kubo, while characters from the film are stitched into the collar.
