The six-shoe 2015 Nike Doernbecher Collection introduces the Air Jordan 13, designed by 11-year-old John Charles to showcase his interest in soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, and the unusual skill of being able to swallow seven pills at the same time.

Charles developed the trick while taking his medicine to fight Crohn’s disease, a battle he’s turned into creative inspiration with the AJ13. The shoe’s pearlescent green and black exterior provides an attention-grabbing backdrop for graphics of his soccer jersey number, a cartoon of a kid raising one eyebrow – another of Charles’s talents  – and the seven pills.

The details continue inside the shoe, where his brother Jonah and German Shepherd named Teagan are shown on the sockliner, as well as a depiction of an Egyptian pyramid – a preferred destination – and food favorites – “Chicken and Jo-Jos.”

Even his favorite foods get a shout-out: Look closely at the lace tips, and you’ll see the words CHICKEN AND JO-JOS.

The word “Crohn’s” is featured in the outsole, a detail Charles added on purpose: “When I’m walking, I want to literally stomp out the disease with every step.”

Charles’s Air Jordan 13 will release alongside the rest of the 2015 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection on Saturday, November 21 at nike.com, as well as at select Nike retail spots, and select Villa (King of Prussia, Harper Court, Mall of America and Skillman Center) and Shoe Palace (Melrose, Fashion Show and Oakridge) locations.
