Among the 30th anniversary gems Jordan Brand has un-vaulted this year, Air Jordan 1 The Return is perhaps the rarest. As Nike details, this particular model was created for Michael Jordan as an alternative to the stock AJ1, with Jordan returning from a broken right foot during the 1985-86 season and in need of comfort and stability in his playing shoe.

Air Jordan 2 was still nearly six months away from hitting shelves but jumped on stage early with its thicker build and full-length Air unit. The switch-up necessitated a slight twist in the details as well, with the Air Jordan Wings logo converted to display “Nike.”

The latest colorway for the Air Jordan 1 High The Return – White/Black-Soar – releases this Thursday, October 22 with a flipped appearance first seen on 2014’s Fragment Design x Air Jordan 1.
