I love you, Basketball. I love everything about you and I always will. My playing days in the NBA are definitely over, but our relationship will never end.

That’s how Michael Jordan said goodbye to his NBA playing career on April 20, 2003. Fresh off of playing his final game just days before on April 16 in Philadephia, Jordan’s 860-word sign-off missive appeared as a full-page ad in the New York Times. It was part love letter, part salute, and part autobiography to a life and career never before seen and never to be matched.
