Vintage Gear rewinds to 1991 and the “Stay In School” issue of Nike’s Air Jordan trading card series. Essentially the series replicated the ads of the day, in this case Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon rocking the Air Jordan VI while encouraging youngsters to stay in school. MJ and Mars had the attention of early ’90s youth, and Nike made sure to capitalize with positive messaging. The undercurrent of such outreach was that while Jordan made playing pro basketball seem like a cake walk, it’s not an easy gig to get. Therefore, it was important for kids to keep dreaming while keeping their feet on terra firma, in school and, preferably, in Air Jordan sneakers.
