Sam Perkins knows all about Michael Jordan. While many will remember MJ’s legendary mid-air hand-changing layup over Sam in the 1991 NBA Finals, the two once were teammates during their college years and worked together to save their sophomore season from an upset against ACC rival Maryland in a close 72-71 victory in which each tallied a game saving block. Today’s VG is a magazine article from that game, in which MJ is billed as ‘A Late Bloomer’, and coach Dean Smith described a “quiet confidence” in a young Michael Jordan. In the article’s front page – which is signed in blue ink by Jordan – Smith goes on to say “He doesn’t come out and say, ‘I’m better than you.’ But somewhere, something comes through that he feels he is better as a player.” The article is definitely a must read about a formidable player before he became the world’s best, and you can bid on the signed piece of history from millcreeksports on eBay.
