Michael Jordan broke the navicular tarsal bone in his left foot just three games into his second NBA season, shelving the NBA’s fastest rising star for 18 weeks. After missing 64 regular season games, Jordan returned to the Chicago Bulls lineup with doctors and team management holding their breath that Jordan wouldn’t re-injure the foot. It’s this boldness and leadership that inspired the Air Jordan 1 Wings, a luxury leather take that came about through the efforts of Jordan Materials Design Director Suzanne Piubeni, Color Designer Kelsey Amy, and Senior Product Line Manager Jeff Atienza.
The creative trio took their experience from the Air Jordan 12 Wings and applied it to MJ’s iconic first signature shoe, while also answering the call of trying something new. That meant starting with gold-undertoned black leather that revealed a statue-like finish when processed, gold-trimmed Wings touches, and a translucent outsole. The finished product is a worthy commemoration of MJ’s will to win.
Air Jordan 1 Wings releases May 17th for $200.
