Mitchell & Ness continues its commemorative Michael Jordan jersey series with the most famous number-change in sports history.

The brand has re-created Jordan’s number 45 Chicago Bulls home jersey, exact to the specifications MJ wore when he returned to the NBA in March 1995. Jordan’s first official game came on the road in Indianapolis on March 19, 1995, but the Chicago faithful got to see him in action for the first time in the new United Center on March 24, 1995 against the rival Orlando Magic. Jordan scored 21 points to go with four rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and two blocks – just his third game back.

Jordan returned to the NBA with a fresh slate in number 45, a tribute to his late father who last saw him play in 1993 in number 23. But the number symbolizes ties to Jordan’s childhood. Number 45 was Jordan’s baseball number in little league and he reprised it for his stint in the minor leagues, a nod to his older brother Larry who wore it before him.

Jordan’s sudden switch from 45 to 23 for Game 2 of the 1995 Eastern Conference Semis cost him a $25,000 fine per game, totaling $100k through the end of the Bulls’ season.

Find exclusive photos below. The Michael Jordan “45” jersey will be available at select Mitchell & Ness retailers.
