Gokul Venkatachalam made news on Thursday for ending the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee in a tie with Vanya Shivashankar, but it’s the shoes he wore during the competition – Air Jordan 11 “Legend Blue” – that have drawn the attention of sneaker fans and bystanders alike in the afterglow.

GQ caught up with Venkatachalam to ask him about the Jordans he wore, how strong his love of sneakers actually is, whether or not he can spell “Doernbecher” correctly, and more.
