Seeing the greatest basketball player in the world switch sports sent shockwaves through 90s culture that transformed basketball fans to sudden baseball experts in the matter of days, but that’s what happened when Michael Jordan’s early retirement led to a contract with the Chicago White Sox and their AA affiliated Birmingham Barons. Interestingly enough, MJ’s coach would later go on to be the incredibly successful manager of the Boston Red Sox and now Indians in Terry Francona. To honor his brief foray into the minors, Jordan Brand will be releasing the Air Jordan 9 “Barons”, a shoe that takes the subtle palette of black and grey that the Sox and Barons shared. The sneaker even features the number ’45’ on the back heel adding an added level of mystique to the release that drops April 4th.
