Everybody remembers the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, with Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins squaring off for ultimate dunk artistry bragging rights. But the two superstars always formed a marquee matchup every time the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks met, especially their game on December 10, 1986.
With the Bulls visiting the Hawks at The Omni, Jordan and Wilkins proceeded to scorch the nets in a tit-for-tat scoring battle. Wilkins got off to a fast start, driving and dunking, wheeling around for jumpers, while Jordan warmed up with his own repertoire of midrange jumpers and acrobatic volleys to the rim. When the dust finally settled, Wilkins had notched 57 points on 19 of 28 from the floor, while Jordan recorded 41 on 15 of 25. Atlanta won in a walk, 123-95.
Catch the highlights of this legendary duel below, including many that have made many highlight reels in the 30 years since. Click ahead to the 7:38 mark for a prime example – Dominique with the reverse flush and MJ executing his patented up-and-under drive.
