JD: How did you get ahold of this shoe?
KA: It was customary for brands to send samples of clothing and gear to ProServ for approval or distribution to the athlete. With a big roster of star athletes in multiple sports, ProServ always had boxes and boxes of gear stored in agents’ offices or in locked storage closets. Around 1993, someone was going through one of the storage closets and came across two orange Nike shoe boxes. Each box contained only one shoe. They were the Air Jordan 1s, one “Chicago” and one “Black Toe.” They were going to toss them in the trash. My office was directly opposite that closet. Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago and a huge Jordan fan, I said, “I’ll take them.”
I had no idea at that moment what I had in my hands. My first thought was “I hope they are my size.” But I was disappointed to discover they were too big, size 13.5. I was hoping to wear them, even if they were different colors, but I noticed they were each a right foot. Presumably, the left shoes were put on display somewhere in the office, and these were left over. I immediately liked the “Black Toe” the best and put it on my desk as a pen holder. My office was decorated with Jordan posters and a Bulls backboard, so the shoes were a nice addition.
JD: Did MJ ever try these on or have them in his possession for any amount of time?
KA: They look unworn, and the 1984 “Black Toe” sample has a factory sticker inside of the heel, and it appears untouched.
