Batmobile, Batphone, Batarang – Batman has a bat version of everything. But his footwear was more of a grey area of classification because he’s filtering through Gotham City fighting various syndicates. That kind of work requires something boot tough; yet a boot is impractical for roundhouse kicks and impromptu running through alleys. However, an armored sneaker like this Air Jordan 6 now up for bids? That could work.

That’s what costume designer Bob Ringwood considered while shaping the look for the late ’80s/early ’90s Batman movie series. The story goes that Warner Bros.’ relationship with Nike at the time (think Hare Jordan) help facilitate the development of the Air Jordan 6 “Batboot” that actor Michael Keaton wore for his second go-round in the title role. Warner Bros. used the Nike Air Trainer III in 1989’s Batman to such success that the concept was revisited for the next film installment.

The sneaker choice was obvious – Batman Returns began filming in June 1991, the same month Michael Jordan won his first NBA title wearing Air Jordan 6 and smack in the middle of the shoe’s release schedule.

Batman Returns released on June 19, 1992, going on to gross $266.8 million, a successful return but a disappointing drop from the first film’s $411.3 million harvest. (Danny DeVito’s “Penguin” puking blood and eating raw fish where a mobster top hat and monocle would’ve sufficed, coupled with producer Tim Burton’s ramped-up goth weirdness, probably turned off a few moviegoers.) With sharp eyes and some patience, fans can catch glimpses of the Jordan Batboot during DVD rewatches.

And you can pick up the real thing now, signed by Keaton himself. The Air Jordan 6 Batboot is currently topping the $2600 mark, so if you’re game to add this crazy bit of movie – and Air Jordan – history, head over to eBay.
